Community Involvement Legacy Homes is a non-profit,
charitable housing corporation created by the
Brockville
and District Association for Community Involvement.
Our purpose is to help people with intellectual disabilities to have a
home of their own, with out having to negotiate the complexities of home
ownership directly.
|
The idea originated from members of the
Brockville
and District Association for Community Involvement's Legacy Committee.
|
“ We don’t want our children to live in group
homes or be vulnerable to a government coming along and saying they have to
move, but we know we aren’t going to live forever.” |
|
Irene
Horbay, President, Legacy Homes |
Legacy Homes is a partner to Legacy Supports, which is operated by the
Brockville and District Association for Community Involvement.
Both entities have been deeply influenced by a group of
“older” parents who have been involved with the Association for many
years, and who have fought for the inclusion of their sons and daughters with
intellectual disabilities through out their lives.
Legacy Homes is another step in that journey.
|
“Legacy is about stability, safety and support for my son to live in his
own home. Legacy Homes will
technically own my son’s home. But he gets the appropriate supports to stay in
his own home, in his own community, as long as he wants to. That’s his equity.
It's about commitment to a place, to people, to a community.”
